Elim Nursery School uses the Core Knowledge Preschool Sequence®, which gives guidelines for fundamental competencies and specific knowledge that will provide preschool children with a solid foundation for learning in kindergarten and beyond.
Core Knowledge offers a coherent progression of skills in five areas:
- Language Skills use language to describe, sequence, think, and organize information; understand vocabulary and syntax; listen and respond to nursery rhymes, poems, fingerplays, songs and stories; and develop emerging literacy skills in reading and writing.
- Social Skills develop autonomy, sense of self and responsibility; work in groups; ask for and offer help; take turns; follow rules; and respect others.
- Cognitive Development use and understand: mathematical reasoning, number sense, orientation in time and space, scientific reasoning, the physical world, music and the visual arts.
- Work Habits develop memorization skills; follow directions; understand “school language;” initiate work; and plan, organize and complete assigned tasks.
- Motor Skills develop and refine gross motor skills, eye-hand coordination, body image and balance; play group games; and use body expressively.
Of these five areas, Elim primarily focuses on the first two, Language and Social Skills, as these are the most critical for kindergarten success. Core Knowledge information will be provided through the year to help parents support this development at home.
